ALASKA INSIDE PASSAGE
&
CANADIAN ROCKIES 2012

An alternative means of travel to CRUISE SHIPPING it up or down the INSIDE PASSAGE, combined with travel in the CANADIAN ROCKIES

Using Vancouver as a starting point, we used the GREYHOUND bus to take us to the Alaska Ferry Terminal at BELLINGHAM in Washington. Here we began our 'ALASKA FERRY ADVENTURES'
Glacier Bay Super Saver

This finished at JUNEAU. We then caught the Alaska ferry MATANUSKA back to Canada at PRINCE RUPERT BC. This is the only Canadian port of call in the Alaska ferry system.

From Prince Rupert we caught the inexpensive
VIA Canada Rail to JASPER AB
then did a circuit, Jasper - Banff - Adams Lake - Clearwater - Jasper, by HIRE CAR.
Then VIA Canada Rail back to Vancouver

WHISTLER

Greyhound do a day trip return to Whistler from Vancouver package which includes passes for all gondolas and chairlifts for $80 or so. Pretty good value. The trip up the Sea to Sky highway takes 2 1/2 hours and is spectacular.

A 15 minute walk from Roundhouse Lodge gets you to The Peak chairlift, then up to the peak of Whistler Mountain

Our 30 minutes or so at the peak saw visibility come and go as the clouds passed by

The trip down on the chairlift is equally as spectacular as the trip up

The Peak2Peak gondola is world record breaking
1. Longest unsupported span of 3.024 kilometres
2. Highest lift of its kind at 436 metres above the valley floor
3. Completes the longest continuous lift system on the globe

The trip from Roundhouse to Rendezvous was quite crowded, but we decided to return to Roundhouse again on an empty gondola

We stayed on the same gondola for the trip back because of the solitude. I thought it might have been a good chance to join the mile high club (albeit less than a mile) - but it takes two to tango!

The view up the valley from the gondola

And the view down. A trip on the 2 chairlifts from Rendezvous down to Blackcomb, and a scenic trip back to Vancouver on Greyhound, ended a memorable day
