ALASKA INSIDE PASSAGE
An alternative means of travel to CRUISE SHIPPING it up or down the INSIDE PASSAGE, combined with travel in the CANADIAN ROCKIES
Using Vancouver as a starting point, we used the GREYHOUND bus to take us to the Alaska Ferry Terminal at BELLINGHAM in Washington. Here we began our 'ALASKA FERRY ADVENTURES'
This finished at JUNEAU. We then caught the Alaska ferry MATANUSKA back to Canada at PRINCE RUPERT BC. This is the only Canadian port of call in the Alaska ferry system.
From Prince Rupert we caught the inexpensive

MV Matanuska - Juneau to Prince Rupert BC VIA Rail - Prince Rupert to Jasper |
Our train at Prince Rupert. It left on time at 8am. That is probably the only time we were on schedule.
We'd already driven up the Skeena River to Terrace in our hire car. It is quite spectacular scenery
This is supposedly the best view of a glacier from any train in Canada
By the time we got to Smithers, roughly halfway to our 1st day destination Prince George, we were running well behind schedule. The rail system was sold to some freight company. Freight trains take priority over passenger trains. The closer we got to Prince George the more we stopped and the further behind we got. When we finally arrived at Prince George at 11.10pm, several hours late, any fond memories of the days travel had been long forgotten!
The trip from Prince George to Jasper was on time, which made for more enjoyable viewing of the scenery.
The train slowed right down for the trip past Mt Robson, the highest peak in the Canadian Rockies. But it was mostly hidden by clouds - like it is almost all of the time. But it wasn't the next day!!!! Check out the Jasper pics to see Mt Robson at its best
Our train at Jasper station. This train trip was probably one of the downers of our trip so far - but it was OK. If nothing else a cheap way to get from Prince Rupert to Jasper. The seats and seating arrangements are quite comfy (compared to peasants class on an airline anyway), but the service wasn't anything special.
