ALASKA INSIDE PASSAGE
An alternative means of travel to CRUISE SHIPPING it up or down the INSIDE PASSAGE, combined with travel in the CANADIAN ROCKIES
Using Vancouver as a starting point, we used the GREYHOUND bus to take us to the Alaska Ferry Terminal at BELLINGHAM in Washington. Here we began our 'ALASKA FERRY ADVENTURES'
This finished at JUNEAU. We then caught the Alaska ferry MATANUSKA back to Canada at PRINCE RUPERT BC. This is the only Canadian port of call in the Alaska ferry system.
From Prince Rupert we caught the inexpensive

MV Matanuska - Juneau to Prince Rupert BC VIA Rail - Prince Rupert to Jasper Wells Gray |
Driving from Banff to Clearwater we took the shortcut via Adams Lake. Shortly after passing a large sawmill we reached this vantage point, looking south from where we'd come. Note the large 'enclosures' on the eastern shore containing many logs ready for milling
Spahats Falls is between the town of Clearwater and the entrance to the park
Dawson Falls is just downstream from the Helmcken Falls, which are probably the best known falls in Wells Gray Provincial Park
Helmcken Falls on this day very much created its own misty fog, partly obscuring the view, but adding to the aura
After Dawson and Helmcken Falls the road becomes dirt - or mud if it happens to be raining. This was one of the very few days of rain we had on the whole trip.
Baileys Chute is a popular viewpoint for Chinook Salmon leaping upstream around this time of year (early September). But not this year yet - or when we were there anyway
Looking upstream to Baileys Chute with some well-worn timber washed up
Further upstream from Baileys Chute is its source of water, Clearwater Lake. The outlet of the lake can be seen here top right, with some more 'firewood' in the foreground
Leaving Wells Gray, the Southern Yellowhead Highway 5 hits the main Yellowhead Highway 16. Shortly after, heading towards Jasper is the Rearguard Falls
The Rearguard Falls. No salmon here today either!
At the small parking area near Rearguard Falls. Some people have to really 'slum it'!
Shortly after on Highway 16. Around a corner and WOW - Mt Robson again on a clear day. This was taken through the windscreen while driving. I should've pulled up where there was room on the other side of the road - like the pickup. Came out alright though
Once again Mt Robson is the highest peak in the Canadian Rockies. The small 'settlement' here consists of a Visitor Centre and a Souvenir Shop
