Using Vancouver as a starting point, we used the GREYHOUND bus to take us to the Alaska Ferry Terminal at BELLINGHAM in Washington. Here we began our 'ALASKA FERRY ADVENTURES'
This finished at JUNEAU. We then caught the Alaska ferry MATANUSKA back to Canada at PRINCE RUPERT BC. This is the only Canadian port of call in the Alaska ferry system.

MV Matanuska - Juneau to Prince Rupert BC VIA Rail - Prince Rupert to Jasper Back to Vancouver |
The CANADIAN en-route Toronto to Vancouver, pulling in to Jasper a couple of hours late. Scheduled to leave Jasper at 2.30pm, we left at 6.00pm! We were assured we would still arrive in Vancouver at the scheduled time of 9.30am. We walked off the train at 12 midday, then waited half an hour or so for our baggage. Not good enough Canada Rail. Travelling by Canada Rail is pleasant enough if you have plenty of time and no connections to make - because (except for the PRINCE GEORGE - JASPER leg) we were always very, very LATE!
Heading on the last leg down the mighty Fraser River to Vancouver, I was surprised to see a train going in the opposite direction on the opposite side of the river
South of Vancouver, and just south of Richmond is the historic fishing village of Steveston.
Old buildings remain from the former days of fishing glory
The Gulf of Georgia Cannery is well preserved and has much old equipment inside
Some workers having a chat near the main entrance
We got our $9 day pass's worth - from Steveston by bus then Skytrain - Seabus then bus to Lynn Canyon at North Vancouver
The suspension bridge at Lynn Canyon is a free attraction
Walking trails pass old gnarly trees
As well as scenic river and water views
This supermarket near the Stadium/Chinatown Skytrain station deals mainly in Chinese produce
A large section is devoted to seafood, Chinese style
A large number of live seafod tanks selling everything from shellfish and crustaceans to not so plain old fish
The cruise ship VOLENDAM being serviced at Canada Place terminal
The VOLENDAM was the ship involved in the evacuation of passengers from the BARANOF WIND at Glacier Bay, 2 days after we were on board
