ALASKA INSIDE PASSAGE
&
CANADIAN ROCKIES 2012

An alternative means of travel to CRUISE SHIPPING it up or down the INSIDE PASSAGE, combined with travel in the CANADIAN ROCKIES

Using Vancouver as a starting point, we used the GREYHOUND bus to take us to the Alaska Ferry Terminal at BELLINGHAM in Washington. Here we began our 'ALASKA FERRY ADVENTURES'
Glacier Bay Super Saver

This finished at JUNEAU. We then caught the Alaska ferry MATANUSKA back to Canada at PRINCE RUPERT BC. This is the only Canadian port of call in the Alaska ferry system.

From Prince Rupert we caught the inexpensive
VIA Canada Rail to JASPER AB
then did a circuit, Jasper - Banff - Adams Lake - Clearwater - Jasper, by HIRE CAR.
Then VIA Canada Rail back to Vancouver

MATANUSKA at the Sitka Ferry Terminal. This is quite a way from Sitka town - so we dipped out there. It was real early anyway

Sitka Ferry Terminal

The ferry route to and from Sitka goes through the 30 mile long Sergius Narrows. All shipping, including the Alaskan Ferries, only attempt this passage at slack water. Currents up to 8 knots can be dangerous to shipping. We had quite a long stopover at Sitka, waiting for slack water.

Quite a few fishing boats were passed in the Narrows

The narrowest part of the channel I saw. I was standing on the port side and the starboard - green - channel marker on shore was SO close

Out into more open water and the whale spotters were out with their massive lenses

This was our second call at Petersburgh. The last time was very late in the day. So this was better for taking photos.

Petersburgh has strong Norwegian roots, and the town reflects this

The lovely weather is still following us

It is said Petersburgh is a photographers dream

Yep - I reckon its pretty good. That blue tarp stuffed this shot up though

Pleasure boats as well as commercial fishing boats fill this marina

Goodbye Petersburgh

Petersburgh is at the end of the impressive Wrangell Narrows. Heading towards Wrangell now the light is better for photos than the way north

A chockablock full barge nears Ketchikan just as we leave early in the morning

A good hearty and healthy brekky on the Matanuska

My limit of spirits to take back into Canada. Canadian whisky is much cheaper in the USA than where its made. These 750ml bottles ranged in price from $10.99 to $12.99 each
