ALASKA INSIDE PASSAGE
&
CANADIAN ROCKIES 2012

An alternative means of travel to CRUISE SHIPPING it up or down the INSIDE PASSAGE, combined with travel in the CANADIAN ROCKIES

Using Vancouver as a starting point, we used the GREYHOUND bus to take us to the Alaska Ferry Terminal at BELLINGHAM in Washington. Here we began our 'ALASKA FERRY ADVENTURES'
Glacier Bay Super Saver

This finished at JUNEAU. We then caught the Alaska ferry MATANUSKA back to Canada at PRINCE RUPERT BC. This is the only Canadian port of call in the Alaska ferry system.

From Prince Rupert we caught the inexpensive
VIA Canada Rail to JASPER AB
then did a circuit, Jasper - Banff - Adams Lake - Clearwater - Jasper, by HIRE CAR.
Then VIA Canada Rail back to Vancouver

HAINES

We decided to go on a fast ferry trip back to Haines as we had not seen the town on the way past on the Columbia. The fast ferry Fairweather Express takes 45 minutes for the journey

We kept being told 'You don't know how lucky you are to see this on a day like today'

Tourists posing. Note the sunnies and short sleeve shirt.

Haines has a cruise ship wharf - but the town caters mainly for wildlife/adventure excursions. Downtown is pretty much unchanged

Historic Fort Seward was established way back by the Seppos to stop the Canucks getting a northern seaport for British Columbia - I think?

Most of the old buildings are used for tourist accommodation.

There was a small cruise ship in Haines, and the ferries were heavily booked. We had to catch the Orca Song back to Skagway

Haines rapidly disappearing behind us. Still no jacket on!
